School of Medicine, with its full name Wuxi School of Medicine, Jiangnan University, was established in June, 2012 under the joint efforts of Wuxi municipal government and Jiangnan University. The school is run under the president responsibility system under the leadership of the council, which is composed by officials of related commissions, bureaus and offices in the Wuxi city and department leaders in Jiangnan University. The school sticks to the joint principle of “co-construction under municipal and university, complementary advantages, shared resources, and win-win development”, and promote its construction with a high starting point and high standard. The goal of the school is to become a research-oriented medical school, which is distinctive and advanced among most medical fields in the country.
The school has two graduate majors which are clinical medicine (five-year system) and nursing and two first-level discipline master’s programs that are public health and preventative medicine, and nursing. Till now, the school has 316 undergraduates and 56 postgraduates. The school plans to include about 1500 students, which will be three levels educational system that covers undergraduate and master as well as doctorate, with the undergraduates and graduates ratio 1:1. With leading spirit of “virtue, erudite, diligence and contribution”, development mode of small range and elite system, the school is meant to develop such medical talents who are skillful, with basic clinical working ability and life-learning ability, and who are contributing to the city Wuxi as well as the whole country. It seeks to build clinical application-oriented talents with “high-quality, solid foundation and strong skills”.
The school is equipped with 170 full-time teachers, among whom 70 with titles above assistant professor. It boasts one distinguished professor from Cheung Kong Scholars Programme and National Thousand Talent Plan, one from Youth Cheung Kong Scholars Programme of Ministry of Education of China, and a total number of 36 people have been awarded as one of Outstanding Contributing Youth and Middle-aged Experts in Jiangsu Province, Key Medical Talents in Jiangsu Province, Innovation and Entrepreneurial Talents in Jiangsu Province, The Top Six Talents Summit in Jiangsu Province and High Level Talent Training Plan of Jiangsu Province, which is also known as the “333 Project”. At the same time, the school and its affiliated hospital are recruiting high-level talents from the globe, which initially forms the effect of a hub for talents. In addition, the school spares no efforts to forge an advanced teaching team with virtue, knowledge, skill and innovation.
Organization and Structure
The school has four faculties including basic medicine, clinical medicine, nursing and public health, and three corresponding teaching and experimental centers. Under the basic medicine department, there are six teaching and research offices which involve Anatomy and Embryology, Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, Physiology and Pharmacology, Pathology and Pathophysiology, Pathobiology and Immunology, and Preventive Medicine. Clinical Medicine Department is set in the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangnan University (The Fourth People’s Hospital in Wuxi City), which plans to establish disciplines such as General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, General Surgery, Medical Technology and ENT (Including Imaging, Nuclear Medicine, Dermatology, Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Stomatology, Ophthalmology) and teaching and research offices as Department of Chinese Medicine and Comprehensive Teaching and Research Section (including Infectious Diseases, Psychiatry and Mental Hygiene, Critical Care Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine, Introduction to Medicine, etc.) . Nursing Department consists of basic nursing teaching team of School of Medicine and nursing department of Affiliated Hospital of Jiangnan University, with training center for basic nursing skills and for clinical nursing skills (involved in the teaching and experimental center for clinical nursing skills Affiliated Hospital of Jiangnan University).
The school has excellent base system for clinical teaching. It has one directly affiliated hospital--Affiliated Hospital of Jiangnan University (The Fourth People’s Hospital in Wuxi City), and 5 indirectly affiliated hospitals which are The Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Jiangnan University in Wuxi City, 101 Affiliated PLA hospital of Jiangnan University, Wuxi People’s Hospital, The First People’s Hospital in Wuxi City, The Second People’s Hospital in Wuxi City, The Third People’s Hospital in Wuxi City and so on. Besides, the School has more than ten teaching practice hospitals in the country such as Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Shanghai General Hospital, Wuxi Hospital of Chinese Medicine, Wuxi Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, Wuxi Mental Health Center, The Ninth People’s Hospital in Wuxi City, Rongjun Hospital in Jiangsu Province, Jiangyin People’s Hospital, Yixin People’s Hospital and so forth.
The school has established a three-dimensional cooperative system that covers clinical and nursing, teaching and research, teachers and students. It has completed a number of cooperative programs on teacher training and visiting and student exchanges with many famous overseas medical schools such as University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston, Medical School of University of California, Los Angeles, University of Florida, School of Nursing, University of Michigan, Heart and Diabetes Research Center, NRW, EPFL, Institute of Nursing, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Zhongshan Medical University, Taiwan, Russian National Medical University and so forth. The school vigorously subsidizes students to exchange or learning at home and abroad. More than 50 percent students are provided with opportunities to do research exchanges and short term curriculum projects in the U.S., Switzerland, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Looking forward, there is still a long way to go for Wuxi School of Medicine to achieve its goal with a great responsibility and a glorious mission. But we believe that, as long as we stick to our goals, spare no efforts to speed up its development, we can build it into a medical school which is “distinctive and advanced among most medical fields in the country” under the leadership of Jiangsu provincial and Wuxi municipal government, and make significant contribution to China's medical and health undertakings as well as the high quality medical talents!
